UWM Triangle Brothers Help Control Invasive Species
On the morning of Saturday October 9th, 2010, three brothers from the UWM Chapter of Triangle - Joey Friedli, Tony Klose and Joe Fahrenkopf - participated in a joint philanthropic event with a local Masonic Lodge. The task at hand was to help control the spread of an invasive plant species in the Havenwoods State Forest in Milwaukee.
Wild Teasel (Dipsacus fullonum) is a short-lived perennial or biennial plant species native to Eurasia and Northern Africa. It spreads quickly and causes problems by crowding out other plant species in the area. Since the growing season is almost over, our plan of attack was to remove the dried flower heads, which contained the seeds. This involved cutting 5-10 extremely sharp and prickly flower heads from each plant, of which there were thousands in this particular field, and bagging them in heavy plastic bags while trying not to dump the seeds onto the ground. After a few hours of work, we had made a pretty good dent in the field, and as the sun was still rising on this particularly warm morning, we decided to call it a day. The UWM Chapter of Triangle would like to thank the Masons for allowing us to help with their philanthropy event, and Triangle alumnus Joe Fahrenkopf for supplying the morning's coffee.
